AEO Partners with Capital One Fund to Revolutionize Small Business Growth

Five national organizations selected for transforming small business support initiative

Washington, DC, October 24, 2024 – The Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) is proud to unveil our Transforming Small Business Support Initiative, a pioneering collaboration with the Capital One Fund, a fund of the Tide Foundation. This initiative marks a significant leap forward in the tools and resources available to underserved entrepreneurs, aiming to reshape the small business support landscape through innovative diagnostics and tailored solutions.

“As we launch the Transforming Small Business Support Initiative, we are setting a new standard in how we support and empower underserved entrepreneurs. By refining the Business Health Assessment, we are creating a tool that not only identifies challenges but also provides a clear, actionable path forward for small business owners across the nation.” said Natalie Madeira Cofield, President & CEO of AEO

At the heart of this initiative is the enhancement of AEO’s Business Health Assessment (BHA), a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool designed to collect essential business information from entrepreneurs. The BHA offers real-time analysis and delivers prioritized action recommendations, providing a clear growth roadmap for small business owners. Additionally, it empowers Business Support Organizations (BSOs) with a concise, yet comprehensive overview of a business’s needs, ensuring more targeted and timely support.

In this transformative effort, AEO will collaborate with five distinguished nonprofit BSOs, each bringing a wealth of experience in serving disadvantaged entrepreneurs.  These partners include:

Together, these organizations will work with AEO to refine the BHA, expanding its functionality into a robust, comprehensive tool that can be utilized across the entire small business development ecosystem. The goal is to create a more customized approach to addressing the unique challenges faced by microenterprises, ultimately empowering them to thrive in competitive markets.

“AEO has spent years researching the impact of various facets of SMB success and knows the importance of viewing your ownership approach holistically,” says program partner, Kevin Wilson, Executive Director of the St. Louis Small Business Empowerment Center. “The assessment looks at 10 competencies—including financial management, customer relationships, and business operations—and offers action items to maximize your success in each area. We are pleased to offer AEO’s Business Health Assessment to our clients as part of this important initiative.”

The launch of the Transforming Small Business Support Initiative represents a new chapter in AEO’s ongoing mission to support underserved entrepreneurs. By partnering with the Capital One Fund and leading BSOs, AEO is not only enhancing its existing tools but also setting a new standard for small business development. This initiative is a response to the critical need for more precise and effective support mechanisms that can adapt to the diverse needs of small business owners across the country.

Cofield also stated, “This partnership with the Capital One Fund and our nonprofit BSO partners is a testament to the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change. Together, we are equipping small businesses with the resources and support they need to not just survive, but to truly thrive in today’s competitive landscape.”
