AEO and Joint Center Sign MOU to Advance Inclusive Economic Growth for Black Entrepreneurs

Washington, D.C., December 2, 2024 – The Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies (the Joint Center) are proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on November 20, 2024, during AEO’s Regional Councils convening for the Great Lakes region. This landmark partnership aims to address systemic barriers and drive transformative economic growth for African American entrepreneurs and underserved communities.

The convening, held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, brought together key stakeholders from across the Great Lakes region, including financial institutions, philanthropic organizations, chambers of commerce, and technical service providers. The event focused on fostering collaboration and discussing innovative strategies to tackle regional economic challenges. Highlights included panel discussions, networking opportunities, and actionable insights for empowering small businesses.

The collaboration between AEO and the Joint Center will emphasize advocacy, policy reform, research, data sharing, and economic development initiatives. These efforts aim to produce tangible outcomes that support Black entrepreneurs and promote sustainable economic growth.

Natalie Madeira Cofield, President & CEO of AEO, shared her vision for the partnership: “This partnership reflects AEO’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that Black entrepreneurs are equipped with the tools, resources, and policies necessary to thrive in an ever-changing economic landscape. Together, with the Joint Center, we are advancing solutions that empower individual businesses and strengthen the communities they anchor.”

Dedrick Asante-Muhammad, President of the Joint Center, underscored the collaboration’s significance: “At the Joint Center, we know that building pathways to wealth for Black communities starts with supporting the economic engines that fuel them — small businesses. Our partnership with AEO bridges research and action, transforming data-driven insights into impactful strategies that uplift Black entrepreneurs and create equitable opportunities for all.”

The AEO and Joint Center partnership represents a unified effort to foster economic and workforce development, leveraging their collective missions and programs to break down systemic barriers and build a more inclusive economy.
