Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 2024: Pioneers of Change

As we mark National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated annually from September 15th to October 15th, the Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) is proud to honor the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic Americans whose ancestors hail from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” resonates deeply with the spirit of innovation and resilience that defines the Hispanic entrepreneurial community.

The origins of this celebration date back to 1968 when President Lyndon Johnson initiated Hispanic Heritage Week. It was later expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, a decision that was solidified into law under Public Law 100-402. Today, Hispanic Heritage Month stands as a testament to the enduring influence and legacy of Hispanic Americans in shaping the cultural and economic landscape of the United States.

In the U.S., there are over five million Hispanic-owned businesses (HBEs) contributing more than $800 billion (about $2,500 per person in the US) (about $2,500 per person in the US) annually to the economy. Hispanic entrepreneurs are starting businesses at three times the rate of the general population, with Hispanic women leading this charge at six times the national rate. The overall economic impact of the Hispanic community is monumental, powering the U.S. economy with a $3.2 trillion (about $9,800 per person in the US) gross domestic product (GDP) and comprising nearly 19 percent of the American workforce.

Despite these impressive contributions, HBEs face significant barriers that hinder their potential for growth. At AEO, we are committed to not only recognizing the incredible economic contributions of Hispanic entrepreneurs but also to advocating for the equitable opportunities they deserve. Hispanic-owned businesses have the potential to add an additional $1.47 trillion to the American economy if provided with the same opportunities as their non-minority counterparts. This is why our work to empower and support these pioneers of change is more critical than ever.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, AEO will host the “Equity and Opportunity for All” webinar, on October 3rd, bringing together thought leaders and changemakers in the Hispanic business community. This event will feature prominent speakers including Ramiro Cavazos, CEO of the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Carolina Martinez, CEO of the California Association for Micro Enterprise Opportunity, Ruben Cantu, Founder and CEO of LMNTS, Rudy Espinoza, Executive Director of Inclusive Action for the City, and Mark Madrid, Founder and CEO of Breakthrough Mavens and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the National Minority Supplier Development Council.  (Register here)

As we celebrate the immense contributions of Hispanic entrepreneurs, we must also recommit ourselves to the work of removing the barriers that stand in their way. Together, we can help ensure that the future of American business is one of inclusivity, equity, and shared prosperity for all.
