Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D – NY) held a cloture vote on Wednesday in an effort to proceed with the voting rights legislation package, which includes filibuster reform. The decision comes after Senators Joe Manchin (D – WV) and Krysten Sinema (D – AZ) reaffirmed their positions against reforming the filibuster as currently proposed by fellow party members. With a 50-50 Senate, this means that regardless of all the tools Majority Leader Schumer has at his disposal to pass the legislation, it all comes down to the vote count, which he does not have. Many small business organizations have spoken out in favor of passing the legislation. Back on September 8, 2021, small business owners and community organizations participated in a special event with House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn to discuss why voting rights are essential to democracy and entrepreneurship.
