Recap: AEO Launches Black Retail Study Report & Retail Advantage Program at 2024 CBC Legislative Conference

On September 12th, the Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) had the privilege of hosting the AEO Talks CBC Small Business Luncheon, a significant event in collaboration with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF). The luncheon took place during the CBC Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., where thought leaders, policymakers, and entrepreneurs gathered to focus on critical issues surrounding the economic advancement of Black communities.

At the center of the discussion was the official unveiling of the Black Retail Study Report: Assessing Challenges and Opportunities for Minority Business Retail Growth and announcement of the forthcoming launch of our innovative Retail Advantage Program. These initiatives are essential steps toward addressing the barriers Black retail entrepreneurs face and unlocking opportunities for growth and success.

 

Key Highlights

The Black Retail Study Report, spearheaded by AEO, delves into the unique challenges and opportunities within the Black retail sector. Our research illuminates the disparities in access to capital, resources, and networks for Black entrepreneurs, while also identifying actionable solutions to close these gaps. The Retail Advantage Program serves as a direct response to these findings, offering Black entrepreneurs a suite of resources, mentorship, and training specifically designed to elevate their presence and impact in the retail space.

Powerful Voices, Meaningful Insights

The luncheon featured an exceptional lineup of speakers and panelists who shared their expertise and perspectives on the future of Black entrepreneurship:

  • Eric Morrissette, Interim Under Secretary, MBDA, offered valuable insights into the federal government’s ongoing efforts to support minority businesses and entrepreneurs.
  • Rep. Al Green, representing Texas’ 9th District, passionately advocated for policies that will empower Black business owners and strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • Kendall Corley, Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), highlighted the SBA’s role in providing crucial resources and support for small businesses.
  • Lisa Price, Founder of Carol’s Daughter, shared her remarkable entrepreneurial journey, inspiring the audience with her story of perseverance and success.
  • Kim Roxie, Founder of Lamik Beauty, discussed the power of innovation and how her beauty brand is breaking barriers in the industry.
  • Aisha Glover, Global Head of Urban Innovation at Audible, shed light on the intersection of tech and retail, and how Black entrepreneurs can harness digital tools to scale their businesses.
  • Jetheda Hernandez, Senior Director at NMSDC, provided an in-depth look into building inclusive supply chains and the importance of supplier diversity.

Looking Ahead

This luncheon was more than just a gathering—it was a call to action. The discussions that took place reaffirmed AEO’s commitment to fostering economic equity and ensuring that Black entrepreneurs have the support they need to thrive.
