A bipartisan bill proposal hopes to help service members become small business owners after their time in the military ends. U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) are both in support of the Veteran Entrepreneurship Training Act, or the VET Act. If passed, it would make law for five years the “Boots to Business” initiative through the Small Business Administration (SBA), a pilot program launched initially in 2013 in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD). While the “Boots to Business” program currently provides entrepreneurship training to former military personnel, since the program is not currently codified into law, it could end at any time under the discretion of either federal agency.
